Causality
(Apologies to those whose characters I have used without permission. This appears to be becoming a bad habit of mine; I really should stop it.)
2006
London
"Visitors are always welcome," Caragh's voice came cheerily over the phone. "Will you be wishing access to the moonbridge, or will you travel by mundane means?"
"Oh, don't worry, I'll get the tr..." And then Katrina's thoughts caught up with her unthinking response, and she reconsidered. "Actually, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, would Uncle Keston mind if I used the moonbridge?"
"I'm sure that'll be fine. I'll let Robin know - that's my husband, he's Warder - and you can just come on in."
2012
Bodmin
The last sparks flew up into the sky and the body of Sulien Maneater, Wyrmfoe of the Fox's Rest, was consigned to ash.
Robin yawned. It was so late it was early, but he'd stayed until the fire died down out of respect. Keston glanced across at him, many-coloured eyes glinting orange with the glow from the embers.
"Go to bed, son-in-law. I'll keep the watch."
They were the last two. Gradually, the others had drifted away; Sulien had commanded a lot of respect, but during the telling of her tales it had become almost painfully apparent how few people had actually been close to her. It was odd for Robin to remember now that the Nation's most famous hard-nosed bitch had once been someone he'd considered spending his life with.
"Thanks," he said and stood up and stretched, working out the kinks in his muscles as well as an odd sadness that had somehow caught in his chest. The Gathering was over, and now his thoughts turned toward his warm cottage, with his daughter tucked up in bed and his wife waiting for his return.
London
Pierce looked out across his city and felt a quiet pride in a job well done. London was still a hard city - it always would be - but the Sept was holding its own, aided by a few side agreements with other supernaturals that if anyone found out about he could still blame on Marcus Rolling Thunder.
There was nothing so major that Michael couldn't deal with it while he was gone.
Tomorrow he would travel to Bodmin to meet with Keston of the Splintered Vision, Eldest Theurge of the Nation, and discuss what could be done about the recent strengthening of the Gauntlet. He had a few ideas.
The end times were coming. The end times were always coming. But life went on...
***
Notes:
In this alternate reality, Katrina got to Bodmin in time to warn Keston of the planned assassination attempt. The Spirals never reached the Caern.
She still died in the Orkneys.
Sulien never owed her life to MSR. She never came to London.
When the Sept went up against the sword spirit, Sulien was not there for the sprit to suborn. Pierce never died.
The spirit, however, did. It never linked with Scythe. Scythe never went to Flux. Neither did the rest of the SFS.
Scythe never called up the ratkin; Scar was never destroyed.
Sulien never made any deal with Miranda. Miranda was not tricked. The children were never taken. Mile Deep was never disturbed during their rescue; Rkleish, First of the Black Spiral Dancers, rules there still.
...and now I feel very slightly concerned that apparently everything that has gone wrong in the ZGverse is my characters' fault...
