The first thing Xy noticed about London was the smell. Everything smelled of chemicals and dirt. It filled up her nose, and seemed to stick to the inside of her mouth, every time she inhaled. After the first day she started to cough, hacking up great lumps of unpleasant looking flem, that she spat ashamedly into gritty London soil at the side of the commune.

Lex dragged her along to Kew Gardens and took great proud breaths of the wyld filled air.

"Isn't this different?" he said. Xy didn't know how to say that she could still smell the smoke and the fumes coming from the cars that drove past the tall brick walls that surrounded Kew Gardens, and so she said nothing, but slid her arms around his waist and inhaled the scent of his skin and hair instead. He still smelled wild and clean to her and, when he kissed her, he tasted of the rabbit they had cooked over a campfire on their way down south.

The second thing Xy noticed about London was the light. She had never seen so much of it - bright, and garish and orange. In the night it lit up the sky, and filled every single building with its eerie glow. Xy was used to the velvety dark nights of Griffin's Glen, where Jenny McLeod shut off the oil lamps after 10 pm. In Griffin's Glen, Xy slept in a room where the only light was the thin silver shimmer of the moon, sliding in between the curtains. In London, the streetlights threw their dirty electric glare in through the barely curtained window, and the electric light in the hallway poked at Xy's eyes from the crack in the bedroom door. Whenever she began to doze, a car would drive past outside, and she would wake up with a jolt as the savage searchbeams of headlights ran over her face and body.

Lex didn't seem to stir when the cars drove past, although he would sometimes half wake when he felt Xy start, and try and sleepily soothe her.

"Just a car, love," he would say, and pat at her hair. "Just a car. You can go back to sleep."

After the first few times this happened, Xy gave up on trying to sleep. She didn't like waking Lex, especially while he was still occasionally coughing up blood from the fight with Griffin's Glory, and so she just concentrated on lying very still, sometimes watching Lex sleep. That he was there still seemed a little bit like a miriacle to her, and every single part of him was new and wonderous. While he slept she ran her fingers very gently over the scars he had acquired fighting for her, and then kissed her fingers before touching them again.

She still tried to hide the nausea in the mornings. That had become a habit up in Griffin's Glen, and it was a hard one to break, although Lex seemed to notice, and tried to look after her. He frowned at her slightly, with worried blue eyes. He'd never had to deal with a pregnant girl before, and Xy knew little enough about human pregnancy (which was alarmingly different to lupus pregnancy) to be able to tell him what to do. The odd food she was eating didn't help. Neither she nor Lex had any money, and while there always seemed to be some kind of food in the commune, it was an odd mixture of greasy junk food and pre-cooked left overs. There was sometimes normal looking food, wrapped up in plastic packaging, but Xy wasn't sure how to cook that on the weird electric stove.

Finally, after the first five days, she started setting traps in the junk filled back garden. She caught a slightly unhealthy looking pigeon and plucked, before triumphantly cooking it over a small campfire in the garden. By Xy's normal standards, the meat was stringy and the cooking mediocre at best, but it tasted like heaven when she bit into the juicy and slightly charred flesh.

Then there were the people. After the second day, Xy commented to Lex that she hadn't know there were this many people in the world. They were everywhere, swarming like ants across the weird grey concrete landscape. For the first time in her life Xy saw a myriad of different shapes and colours, splattered across the human form. She saw punks with their hair dyed in unnatural colours. She saw rings pierced through the human face, and she saw girl after girl with weird colours smeared over their lips and eyes.

"That's make up," Lex explained, and laughed when Xy asked "can I try some? How does it work?". He obligingly acquired a small collection of lipsticks and eyeshadows, and laughed even more when Xy spent an evening making both of them look like tribesmen on the warpath.

But Lex wasn't always there. He had other things to do, and after the first couple of days Xy found herself left on her own, more and more. She had the run of Kew Gardens, and the house in Kew that Jamie had bought for them. There were people there as well - people Xy was not used to - and she found herself fighting the urge to panic and run, more and more.

She was afraid of the strangers that trooped through Kew Gardens - monkey people, wrapped up in the weaver, who all smelled of chemicals and smog. She was nervous around the other Garou in Kew - Strix who waved an umbrella at her on the first day she arrived and announced loudly "you're bringing too many of them wild ones in here, girlie! This ain't the country now! I want to see a little more respec' for them spirits as have been living here already", Petra Lud's Daughter, who was brisk and busy, and the Shadow Lord who said little, but watched her with dark and curious eyes. Even the kinfolk - Megan - was a little alarming to be near. She was Fianna kin who had left her mate and child to rut with a metis, and Xy looked on her with a kind of horrified fascination.

She was terrified of the Ratkin. She'd never met a real fera before, and she'd heard stories of the Ratkin that scared her. They moved too quickly, and had a sharp hunger about them that made her nervous. The two buck rats who lived there leered at her quite openly, which threw Xy horribly. No one had ever looked at her that way before. She wasn't used to thinking of her body as a very sexual thing - it was just there. Her legs were long, which meant she could run faster than Connor. Her belly was flat, which was because food was sometimes in short supply. Her breasts and her hips showed she would be able to birth children one day. There wasn't much more to it than that, at least, not until the Ratkin started looking her up and down and occasionally passing comments quite loudly in her hearing.

She overheard the two buck rats talking one day, not quite out of earshot.

"Do you reckon Lex would mind sharing?"

"Can't do, can he? I mean, there's enough of her to go round. And what I wouldn't give for a quick sniff."

"Tell me about it. She's given me a whole new world of masturbation, since she turned up"

There was the sound of a slap, and then the sharp tones of the doe rat piped up.

"Shut it! Both of you! Anyway, she's knocked up now..."

"So? She's still totally shaggable til the third trimester..."

"You've spent too much time thinking about this, Pete," the female said, and the larger of the two male rats chuckled.

"Well," he said. "I see it this way. I'm pretty much wanked out with the other kinfolk girl. I mean, she's been around for ages, and while that video of hers is a great and all time classic, I think there's just not a lot more I can do to my dick while thinking of her. The time has come to move on to something new, and from the speed with which the Flux Cowboy got this one breeding, she's got to be a bit of a go-er"

The other laughed and added "and it'll do her a bit of good to get some rat spunk in 'er. Might improve on the quality of whatever she's breeding if it gets a taste for rat."

"Whatever she's got in there," the girl said. "fuck knows what the Flux Cowboy shoots out of his dick these days."

The conversation moved on, and Xy found herself physically shaking. She hid in the bedroom she and Lex had been sleeping in for the day, and as dusk fell climbed out onto the windowsil, and then scrambled up the drainpipe the roof, where she perched for a while, staring up at the cloudy skies, hunting for stars.

Lex found her there, later that evening, and came to perch by her.

"Are you alright?" he asked at last, and she did not say anything, but rested her head against his shoulder.

"Look," she said, and pointed up to the fat grey moon. "She's away from home, like me..."
