"I came as soon as I heard."
Their faces crumple. They know
her, once a part of their lives,
beginning and ending here
Here where he had begun
Here where he ended too soon.
She is no prying stranger
Bears no taint of the police -
Though the counsellor was nice,
they say, forgetting her name,
A lovely woman, so kind,
Why wouldn't she go away -
But this one can come inside.

She can have the cracked old mug
and balance it on her knee
While they talk of better days,
Recalling (as parents do)
the time when she was his friend
Forgetting (as parents do)
What happened two years before.
They say, "Remember the time
when you two missed the bus
and walked two miles home from town"
And she smiles as she smiled then
Replaying only inside
The heat of his mouth on hers
The needs that went unfulfilled
In a solely physical urge.

They talk as the tea grows cold
of days that won't come again
and that never really were.
She says nothing. It's better -
This illusion that they have,
Their fond idea of a son -
Than ordinary, sordid truth;
Violence and booze and sex,
Used condoms under a bush.

She listens and time moves on.
"Where did the afternoon go?
It was kind of you to come.
Must be time for you to go."

It is. There's another door
On the other side of the park.
"I came as soon as I heard."
So many to see before dark.
