"Why do you think it happened? I mean, I have a pretty good idea, but I'd like to get your perspective on it too. I'm not perfect, not by any stretch of the imagination, but do you think we can pin the blame for this on anyone? Beyond those rats, obviously, I think there's got to be a reason they chose tonight to do this. It can't have been a coincidence."
"No, no, you're right, coincidence or not, I've got work I should be getting on with. I just thought that you'd appreciate some company. And, well, I'd like a bit of company. Just somebody to talk to for a while, I've had a night that you couldn't possibly im.. oh, perhaps you could imagine it. I mean, you saw what happened from your window over there. But at least it looks like your daughter and wife escaped."
"I guess that is the good side. There are survivors. To be honest, when I first saw the scale of devestation, I thought you were all gone for sure. That there'd be nobody left to pick up the pieces. The trouble is, well, there's a lot of people who'll see what's happened and come along to finish the job. I'm not talking about the gangs specifically, or the looters, there's just a lot of other things out there, in the dark places of this city, that'll likely be dancing on it's ashes. And they'll get angry, really angry, if you dare to show up at that party."
"It's getting late. Early, in fact. I've got a lot of other people to see in this building alone, but... thanks for sharing what you know, and letting me talk to you. It means a lot to me. I know I'm not much, but I'm on your side here."
Thomas smiled at the corpse as he stood himself upright, brushing the dust and ashes of the city off his jacket before moving on to find the next body.

Date: 2009-02-04 11:17 am (UTC)I was going to say that I don't really have any other character that would talk to a corpse, but then I realised that, actually, I probably do. Ahem.
