Y'know, there were actually characters I *didn't* take into that combat.
Akenheru didn't seem to be in right now, which meant that he never needed to find out that she was living off KFC again. Rae sat down on the low pallet, one hand lifting the bag high out of reach of Spot's hopeful nose. With the other she clicked her fingers and pointed to the head of the bed, and the dog obediently jumped up and settled down against the pillow.
She got out the box of nuggets and settled back against Spot's warm side, careful not to hurt him. He thrived on all this walking about and meeting new people, but even he was tired by now. She got out a nugget and took a bite.
An underground cavern filled with insects, their chitin deformed and razor-sharp. They parted to let two people through, and then closed in again behind them.
"You're not good enough for him," Kansas told a huge insect, bloated with power and fertility, that could only be the Queen. "He wants Baal."
A dead-looking man with blue-on-blue eyes, clothed in the invisible raiment of his power, took an astonished step back as Kansas shouted.
Face went up in flames, like a living candle, and was gone without leaving even ash.
"Aw, shit. Rehema?" Kansas shouted in hopeful desperation as the wounded god turned his full power on him. Instinctively, she reached out...
She was standing in a hall she knew rather well, before an overwhelming presence that she also knew rather well. The taste of KFC sat rather oddly in her mouth.
Though not nearly as oddly as the man who stood beside her.
"Kansas," she said in tones of measured calm, "What the fuck did you just do?!"
Back in Akenheru's strange pocket-dimensional house, Spot delightedly wolfed down the chicken nuggets that had fallen from the generous hand of his mistress. Soon he would start to wonder why she was lying so still...
