It should have been easy. Bella stood with the others, shifting from foot to foot in eager excitement, as Brand explained. Victor (father? No, he'd never been proper father. Never been real family, so it was OK) had betrayed them. Gone to the Camarilla and sat an' talked to them, not gone in with fire and sword and stuff to kill them.
Pavel was behind them, and someone she didn't know was beside her, and Alex, and it had been a long time since she and Alex had fought together. Not since... she couldn't remember, but she could remember the fight against the Elder, and the fight on the bridge, and now he was beside her again, and everything was right.
Pavel made the wall go funny, and they went in.
He knew they were coming. Of course he'd known they were coming. He'd been her Ductus, and her Bishop (father) and he was all power and magnificence and she couldn't touch him.
He ran, slow-motion, bounding with leisurely grace, big coat whirling about him like wings. She circled him, again and again, but his power was everywhere, and she couldn't touch him.
The world speeded up again. Alex and the other one passed her but that was OK, she could catch up again. Just as soon as Victor stopped being so bright and strong...
White light exploded in her eyes, and Victor was gone. There was nobody there except someone, a vampire, a Camarilla, a weak one. Frustrated of her target, she turned, and couldn't remember why she was turning. Couldn't remember the word for the funny two-leg thing standing in front of her. Couldn't remember how to to put one foot in front of the other...
She fell, unconscious.
So she didn't see the other Sabbat, the one she didn't know, realise that everything was going wrong and scoop her up as he turned to run. Didn't feel the warmth of the only family she'd ever known, taking care of their own.
Didn't feel the heat of the fire that struck from the sky and burned them both. Didn't feel him drop her and turn to confront the new threat, didn't feel Alex, her beloved brother/friend/father Alex pick her up quick as if Ellen had drawn it all out for them, getting her out.
Didn't feel anything as the air turned to flame around them, blistering through skin, charring through flesh, searing through to bone.
Alex staggered out the other side, burned to charred flesh and bone, hurting as he hadn't hurt for years, but still alive. His cradling hands, however, held only ash.
