Last night I dreamed I was at that ball again.
The man I loved put an arm around my waist, and spun me in and out of candlelight and shadow.
"I love you," I said.
And then the ballroom dissolved into blood and flame.
I woke up drenched in my own bloodsweat, and found myself retching on the floor. I shouldn't still feel like this. It was just a dream, and it all happened a lifetime ago. I shouldn't still wake up sweating and puking like this.
Elias cleaned me up and stroked my hair, just as he did when I first came to, bloodied and born again. He wrapped my soft woollen shawl around my shoulders, and murmured gentle words in my ear.
"They are dead," I said, and he wiped bloodied tears away from my eyes. "They are all dead. I couldn't stop anyone from dying. And it was such a beautiful place."
"Shhhhh..." Elias crooned, and rocked me back and forth. "A good angel came and took them away. They are all safe now. Kemuel has taken them."
"I don't pray to Kemuel," I said, and stared at my hands. "I don't know who I used to pray to. Do Catholics pray to angels?"
Elias kissed my forehead. "You're not a Catholic anymore, precious. You're an angel. You're my own, perfect angel."
He laid out a ball dress, just like the one I always wear in my dreams. "You'll look perfect tonight," he said.
I stared in flat eyed misery at another perfect dress, laid out in the same perfect room.
I think I knew then that the time had come to leave.

It was the only explanation I could come up with.
Malkavians dressing each other?

Who am I kidding :)
