As Dawn breaks, Michael Stands-Ready howls a greeting, and his thanks, to the rising Sun. And on this particular day, he had a lot to be thankful for. His life, his friends, his Sept. The chance to go on…
The first twenty years of his life had been hard - respect had been hard to come by for a Metis in a Fianna Sept. The last twenty months, though...
Since coming to London, he'd found a place where his horns didn't seem to get in the way. People had listened to what he'd had to say, had respected him for who he was, rather than just seeing him as something that shouldn't be. He’d found one pack, and then another, and for the last ten months, he’d led a Sept. And in those ten months…
There had been good, and bad. In the last ten months, he’d scored victories, and suffered losses. In the last ten months, he’d fallen for two women, and been lucky enough to end up with one of them, even though she wasn’t around for a while. But, she’d be back. The worst part of that time was that the other had died, along with Michael’s two best friends, and he’d never forget how much it had hurt to lose them.
Despite all the pain, despite the loss and the chaos, despite how much he wished he could change some of it, the last year had been unforgettable, and now, at the start of his new one, Michael promised himself the next year would be better.
This day had never been a celebration, he thought, but at least a birthday was a reminder to think about the past, and to hope for the future.
