It was a dark and stormy night. It was generally a dark and stormy night around the Caern at the moment. Sulien strongly suspected Marcus of having acquired a pet storm while in Flux, but however miserable it made Caern watch, sending him back for another go was not an option.
Of course, there were positives. It might be easier to spot invisible enemies – or friends – in the rain splashing from their skin. It was a very small positive, in the face of the compromise of the entire Caern defence.
Petra hadn’t wanted to go to Flux. Sulien knew that. She hadn’t wanted to go to Flux, she hadn’t wanted to break the bargains she had made, she had only wanted to stop killing Kin.
It wasn’t her fault what Flux had made her, and she had to die all the same.
It was the same for the Abominations. They’d fought against the leeches until they were overpowered, and they fought the inevitable still. They were proud, and they were determined, and they were warriors in every sinew. They’d have made good Garou.
It wasn’t their fault what the leeches had made them, and they too had to die.
“I never asked for this,” Sulien whispered softly, staring at the rain-blackened haft of the spear where it stood planted solidly in the wet earth before her.
And it wasn’t her fault what Gaia had made her, but she was going have to kill them all the same.
